ABOUT US

The KCL Womxn in Physics Society was founded in 2015, by a second year undergraduate Sara McCarney, who wanted to address the issue of underrepresentation of womxn in the physics department at King's College London.

This society aims to act as a safe space for all minorities in the field of physics, promoting an inclusive and supportive environment through a range of social, educational and academic events.

Womxn now make up half the national workforce, earn more college and graduate degrees than men, and by some estimates represent the largest single economic force in the world. Yet the gender gap in science persists, to a greater degree than in other professions, particularly in high end, math-intensive fields such as physics. Our main purpose is to build a strong close-knit community within the department, for support, mentorship and progress.

Much has developed since 2015. We’ve become an official KCLSU ratified society, hosted three successful Womxn in Physics London Conferences and ran workshops for our members. We’re running even bigger events this year and we’re continuing the legacy to put another Womxn In Physics London Conference for 2022.

We aim to address issues surrounding the underrepresentation of womxn in Physics through a series of educational and social events. By providing a safe space for self-identifying womxn and non-binary individuals, we aim to promote gender equality and diversity by bringing womxn together to discuss their experience as a minority group and to combat isolation. Womxn are an underrepresented group in Physics particularly in academia therefore we aim to make everyone aware of gender biases in order to tackle gender stereotypes.
